- 医療の主役は患者である 命を尊び患者にとって最適な医療を実現する―― 中部国際医療センターの理事長が説く、 医療人が取り組むべき「命の差」の解消 医療は誰のためのものなのか。 「医師のための医療」になってしまってはいないか。 本書は、医療の使命に向き合い地方都市の中核病院でさまざまな改革に取り組んできた医師による、日本の医療従事者に向けた提言書です。 著者がこれまでに取り組んできた地方での医療改革の軌跡を紹介しながら、医療人としてあるべき姿を説いています。 日本には国民皆保険制度をはじめとした優れた制度があり、 「誰もが分け隔てなく優れた医療の恩恵を受けることができる」とされています。 しかし著者は、病院や医師の都市部への集中をはじめとした医療資源の地域格差は依然として解消されておらず、 患者が診療を受ける機会の平等を奪っているといいます。 医療は患者を救うためのものであり、医療者側の都合で患者を選別し命に差をつけることがあってはならない――。 すべての医療人は自らが「医療者ファースト」に陥ってはいないか見つめ直し、 本来あるべき「患者ファースト」に立ち返るべきだというのが本書の主題です。 現在、岐阜県で６つの医療・福祉施設を運営している著者が、 自らの医療者としての姿勢に疑問のまなざしを向けたきっかけは自身ががんを患い入院した経験にありました。 今から約40年前、脳神経外科部長として手腕を振るっていた著者は肝臓がんを患い、 余命４カ月と宣告され入院を余儀なくされることとなりました。 そこでの入院生活で、医師や看護師への遠慮からナースコールが押せなかったり、 診断結果に意見が述べられなかったりという経験をしたのです。 結果としてこの診断は誤りであったのですが、 この入院生活を通して患者がいかに弱い立場であるかを身をもって思い知りました。 医療を提供する側と、提供してもらう側の立場の差を嫌というほど実感し、 自身も無意識のうちに医療者が上で患者は下と考える横暴な医師であったのではないかと気づかされたといいます。 この経験から著者は医療者のあるべき姿に真摯に向き合うことを改めて誓い、その決意を行動に移してきました。 その後20年余りの間に複数の病院を設立し、 地方であっても患者が望む最適な医療を受けられるようにと最新鋭の機器導入や救急体制の整備を行いました。 さらに社会福祉法人も設立し、医療と福祉の融合等に取り組んでいます。 医療格差なき日本になるために―― 超高齢社会で一人でも多くの人が健康に安心して暮らせるための医療を目指す医療人にとって、道しるべとなる一冊です。
