Rated: NR Format: DVD Romance Editorial Review
Xiu Xiu: The Sent Down Girl is a poignant film that masterfully portrays the harrowing experiences of a young girl during China’s Cultural Revolution. Directed by Joan Chen, this movie combines stunning visuals and a compelling narrative, with its emotional depth resonating with viewers. Although some feel the film leans toward heavy-handed political commentary, it remains a crucial exploration of personal and societal struggles, highlighting the character's profound journey from innocence to the harsh realities she faces. The elegant use of the Mandarin language and the brilliant performances elevate the storytelling, making it a notable piece of cinematic art despite its controversial elements.
