The 3 wire setup allows the valve to stay in its current position when the signal/power is cut, while the 2 wire auto-return version closes when the signal/power is cut. It is IP65 rated and can be used outdoors. Customers have used it for various applications including controlling water in their RV and as part of an automated system for checking cheese bags. However, some customers have experienced issues with the valve such as it breaking into two parts or becoming faulty after just a few weeks of use.
